The Creative Process: Verbal Communication April 20, 2006

I am starting this blog as a means to investigating and recording my ongoing creative process. I am going to strive to be able to clarify the stages and concepts I deal with on a regular basis in creating my work. I have always thought that artist statements were ironic; it seems a contradiction to ask people who have chosen to express themselves visually to write about their work. Yet I am discovering more and more that being forced to write your ideas out can lead to a stronger, more cohesive sense of one’s work. I hope that verbally documenting my ongoing work will allow me a greater capacity to sort out what I am working with visually.

Often times where I want my work to go and what I am physically capable of creating and executing never line up. It is both exciting and frustrating to have more ideas than one can actually complete; from one point of view I thrive on the energy of new concepts. From the other view, the inherent inability to create everything that you’re interested in can feel disappointing to a certain degree. As a result of this, I have ideas that come and go, many of which never come to actual fruition. I want this journal to not only show the works that are completed, but also to record those fleeting concepts so that in some way I am able to retain their some of their presence in my work.
