I was thinking today about another series that I’ve thought of before about people carrying things. I was walking to work today and saw a giant pile of garbage bags all stacked up on the side of a dumpster. I always ask myself what’s inside those bags. Most of the time it makes me feel ill because I think about all of the stuff that people throw away simply because its too hard for them to put something old to better use. I think for a series on carrying, a lot of the driving force behind the concept would be the ambiguity of exactly what the bags contained. After giving it some thought, I definitely would want to have only bags in the imagery, and not boxes. There’s something about boxes that I think is too clear cut in terms of the visual presentation that I think would be too specific for what I’m looking for. In a plastic or cloth bag, there’s a wonderful sense of tension of the bag sagging and being pulled from the mass and weight of the items that are inside.

It frustrates me that I have all these ideas and that I don’t have the time to make all of them happen all at once. I suppose in the end it’s a positive thing to have more ideas than you can execute. Also I think because I have these ideas and can’t make the work right away, it forces me to contemplate and consider the subject matter for a long time before I get into it. Sometimes you can start on a project prematurely before you’ve really given yourself a chance to fully consider the range of options.
