Medardo Rosso: Impressionistic Sculpture

Medardo Rosso

Medardo Rosso, “Ecce Puer”, 1906

I’ve been looking at Italian sculptor Medardo Rosso’s sculptures as references for the sculptures I’m making. In my opinion, his sculptures are everything that most historical figurative sculpture is not. They’re atmospheric, impressionistic, mysterious, subtle, intimate, and quiet. I was lucky enough to see an exhibition of his work at Harvard’s Fogg Art Museum a few years back. His sculptures strike the perfect balance between ambiguity and specificity that I’m working to achieve in these crayon drawings.
