Persistent Pain

I was talking to Tony Janello the other day about my self-portrait series and he observed something unique about the drawing below. Many of the other self-portraits depict a fleeting moment, whereas this portrait represents a persistent state of pain and emotion, which in some ways is more frightening and disturbing.  I think about this portrait as the aftermath of the more extreme and violent expressions; in other words, what is leftover when one has exhausted the physical limits of the body.
