Michael Mazur: Dante’s Inferno Etchings

Etching from Michael Mazur’s series based on Dante’s Inferno.

In thinking about deeply immersed heads in the water, I’m reminded of two images from printmaker Michael Mazur’s suite of 41 etchings based on Dante’s Inferno. In addition to his capacity to interpret a historical narrative in a contemporary context, Mazur’s ability to combine both structure and complete liberation in printmaking techniques is astounding. The prints seem specific and detailed, yet at the same time are ambiguous and enigmatic, a balance of ideas that I’m always seeking to strike in my own work.

You can read this previous amusing post about when I met Michael Mazur at the opening of a printmaking show I was in last year.
